You May Not Be Protected by the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality Alone

If you’ve tuned into the news recently, you’ve probably seen reports of water crises affecting cities across the United States. The largest school district in New Jersey shut off its water due to dangerous lead levels, several drinking water systems in California were found to contain uranium, and, of course, the widely publicized crisis in Flint, Michigan, where lead contamination caused a state of emergency.

Canadian law states that drinking water must meet a certain standard to be considered safe to drink. The Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality, established by the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Committee on Drinking Water (CDW) and published by Health Canada, set the standard for what’s acceptable and considered “safe” when it comes to water – but that doesn’t mean it’s free of all contaminants.

Water Protection and Regulation

Health Canada states that "Canadian drinking water supplies are generally of excellent quality. However, water in nature is never 'pure.'" That's because all water contains low, undetectable levels of certain chemicals and pathogens that are monitored and reported. Health Canada is responsible for deciding which contaminants are monitored, and includes:

  • Microbiological quality guidelines – Disease-causing bacteria, protozoa, and viruses.
  • Chemical and radiological quality guidelines – Found in some drinking supplies, most are only a concern if above the guideline limits.
  • Aesthetic quality and operational guidelines – Taste, odour, and colour are all taken into consideration.

Each contaminant listed above has a baseline limit, meaning that, while there may be some contaminants in your water, their levels are low enough that they can be consumed throughout a person’s lifetime without affecting their health.

However, no amount of lead – which is the main contaminant in question in the United States right now – in drinking water is considered safe. In fact, the United States Environmental Protection Agency's action level is 15 parts per billion, with lead levels in Flint testing higher than 1,000 parts per billion.

The Truth About Your Water

Although the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality are in place to measure contaminants, they’re just a safeguard, protecting against the minimum. To be sure you have the safest drinking water, it’s best to take additional measures.

Your local Culligan Man can perform an extensive water test to check for the presence of contaminants and recommend a solution that can target and remove harmful contaminants from your water.
