Why are boil water advisories issued?

The reasons can vary widely, but often a boil water advisory is issued when there is a possibility that drinking water supplies have been contaminated. Flooding can lead to a boil water advisory, as well as a water main break, damage to water lines due to severe weather, loss of power at a water treatment facility, or a drop in the water system’s pressure. Regardless of the culprit, boil water advisories are issued if an event leads to the potential for harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, or protozoa to grow in the water supply.

What do I do during a boil water advisory?

You’ll want to make sure that any water you drink or cook with is brought to a rolling boil for at least five minutes. While it’s not necessary to use boiled water for bathing, care should be taken not to get any water in your eyes or mouth.

Do I still need to boil my water if I have a Culligan system?
