Bacteria in Water: What to Watch out for

Recently, the Public Health Agency of Canada reported cases of cyclospora infections in B.C., Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec that caused several people to become sick.

Cyclospora is a microscopic single-celled parasite that can lead to an infection in people who consume food or water contaminated by the bacteria, causing an intestinal illnesses called cyclosporiasis. Previous cases of cyclospora in the U.S. and Canada have been tied to various types of imported produce, such as pre-packaged salad mix, basil, cilantro, raspberries, blackberries, lettuce, and peas.

Although this type of contaminant is uncommon in Canada, bacteria in water is something to be mindful of when it comes to your drinking water.

Bacteria in Water

It’s common for lake water to contain bacteria and other microorganisms, some of which can be found in your tap water - especially if you have well water.

Bacteria in water is often a seasonal occurrence. If you’ve noticed that unmistakable rotten-egg smell coming from your water, it could be from the natural fluctuations in bacteria, causing the hydrogen sulphide that produces the odour. Aggravated by temperature fluctuations, this can be more of a problem during the warmer spring and summer months.

When certain bacteria grow in the water supply, microbial cysts can form, potentially leading to mild nausea and varying degrees of intestinal distress. This type of contamination comes from human or animal wastes coming into contact with the water supply.

Treating Bacteria in Water

Chlorine is often used as an additive during the water treatment process to remove bacteria. Although the chemical effectively disinfects water, it can sometimes leave an unpleasant scent behind.

Culligan’s UV Disinfection System is designed to provide water-quality peace of mind, effectively reducing 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, and protozoan cysts (Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium). It’s disinfection without the use of chlorine or other harsh chemicals, leaving you with totally pure drinking water.

Have your water tested for bacteria or other contaminants, and learn how your local Culligan Man can help design and install the right water filtration solution for you.
