Attention: Well Water Users

Private well water isn’t evaluated under the same scrutiny as municipal water, so if you’re one of the 5.5 million Canadians who rely on private wells or smaller systems, it’s important to have your well water tested regularly.

Detecting Well Water Contaminants

If your water tastes bad, has an unpleasant odour, or leaves stains behind, you can be pretty certain there’s a problem. But other, potentially harmful contaminants*, like arsenic, copper, lead, E. coli, radon, and other microscopic bacteria, are tasteless and odourless.

Well owners must be conscious of how seasonal changes affect their water. In late spring and early summer, heavy rains that lead to flooding can release contaminants* that get absorbed into groundwater, while bacterial growth is common in late summer and early fall.

While plenty of these contaminants* occur naturally, others are the result of human activity, like nitrates from pesticides in agricultural run-off.

Well Water Test

For the most part, well water is safe to drink and use around the house for laundry, bathing, and washing the dishes. But dangerous contaminants* can form if water is left unchecked.

Typically, Culligan advises testing the pH level of your well water once a year. That annual test would also check for coliform bacteria, nitrates, and total dissolved solids. We also recommend additional testing every two to three years for tannins, hardness, chloride, sulfate, alkalinity, iron, and copper.

Protect your home and enjoy clean well water – contact your local Culligan Man to schedule your well water test.

*Contaminants are not necessarily in your water.
